CIO Japan Summit
November 8-9, 2023 | Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, Japan
www.november23.ciojapansummit.com

The CIO Japan Summit attendees experienced “Kagami-biraki”, a traditional Japanese ceremony. Bulent Halil, CEOs from Japan, Korea, and Germany, along with chairpersons of CIOs and CISOs, and one representative each from DA and SP participated through a lottery draw.

“Kagami-biraki” originally refers to a ritual marking the beginning of work or events in the new year. “Kagami” symbolises harmony, and “biraki” means opening up to prosperity. In the past, among the warrior class, there was a custom of offering kagami-mochi (round rice cakes) during the New Year and breaking them to eat on the 11th day of the new year, known as “Kagami-biraki.” Even today, in homes and offices, people continue the tradition of offering kagami-mochi at the beginning of the year, celebrating health and development by eating the offered kagami-mochi.

The ritual of opening the lid of a sake barrel is also referred to as “Kagami-biraki”. In liquor stores, the top cover of a sake barrel is called “kagami”. Since ancient times, sake has been offered as ceremonial sake during religious rituals. After the prayers, participants share sake, praying for the fulfilment of their wishes. When ceremonial sake is presented in a barrel, the lid of the barrel is opened, and the sake is served to commemorate the occasion.
